NAT/PAT

Postby JMS » Tue Apr 01, 2014 9:52 am

Hello,

You document on NAT shows the private address block for class c as 192.168.x.x/24.

In the rfc 1918 doc (https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1918) they show 192.168/16.

Is it /24 or /16?

Thanks.

Hi

In actual fact both are correct!

The private class C address block covers all addresses from 192.168.0.0 through 192.168.255.255 (Note that the first two octets are always 192.168)

192.168.x.x /24 means that the network portion of the address is 192.168.x ('x' being any value from 0 to 255 inclusive) and the final 'x' is the host portion (again, any value from 0 to 255 inclusive).

192.168 /16 just means that the first two octets must be 192.168 (as above) and the last two octets can be any values from 0.0 through 255.255

It's kind of like saying "six of one. Half a dozen of the other". They both mean the same thing.

Hope that helps.
